GRADING OPTIMIZATION

Civil Data Optimization

Problem Statement

Preliminary terrain grading is an important stage in civil design to explore different options with project stakeholders, however just like any general grading workflow, preliminary grading involves editing of surfaces and feature lines, which can be tedious, time consuming and requires a lot of manual work.

Goal

  • Walk through the terrain grading steps in a more automated fashion: Define problem areas, setup constraints, and evaluate results.
  • The optimization tool can get data from existing condition easily. Results of preliminary grading can be continuously worked on for the finer and more detailed grading.
  • My Role

Lead the effort to design and launch new product from scratch.

  • Customer journey map
  • Interactive prototype
  • Scrum team collaboration
  • Drive design decision with analytics

  • Customer Journey Map

I read through the help documents, observed how customers using the product, and conducted several customer interviews to investigate customer painpoints.

    Team Collaboration

We formed an international team spanning four different time zones to work on this product. I lead a team of 3 designers to work on product design and research. I am responsible for leading concept design, research customer requirement, work with product management to strategize product roadmap, initiate design prototypes and work with developement teams to realize design in the product.

    Design Thinking

Design workshops are conducted to enhance collaborateion between teams and customers.

Story mapping with the team to size features.

Collaborate with customers to vote on design concepts and guide product direction

    Data Architecture

As Grading Optimization as a product work with other design software in the company, data are exchanged between the design tools and this optimization platform. Diagrams are produced to illustrate the data flow between different tools, how certain data are reshaped after the optimization, and how might we indicate those changes.
